Jacob Lusk Dishes on Who He’s Rooting for on American Idol — and Who He Was Sorry to See Go! Exclusive
While some former American Idol contestants are quick to distance themselves from the competition that made them a household name, the Season 10 alums have no problem admitting they’re watching this season at the edge of their seats. Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Jacob Lusk at the Race to Erase MS Event in Los Angeles, to find out who he’s rooting for, and what’s next in his own career.
Wetpaint Entertainment: Who are you rooting for on Idol? Jacob Lusk: You know, I like ‘em both! I love Jessica [Sanchez]; I think everyone’s ready for a girl to win and she’s an amazing singer and yet I still love Phillip Phillips. He’s a great artist. He flipped an Usher song. I mean, that’s pretty incredible.
Are you a little disappointed about Joshua Ledet, though? I mean, let’s be honest — African American men sometimes have trouble getting in there on Idol. Why is that? [Laughs] You know, I don’t know what it is. I think Jennifer Hudson is a great example that you don’t have to win to do anything and I think he has an amazing voice and I think he’s going to have a great career whether he wins or loses.
How do you feel about Jennifer Lopez and the rumors she might leave? I don’t want her to leave! She’s a really great lady. She’s really sweet and has been supportive of all of us. She really has.
What did she tell you that most stuck in your head from last season? She was a stickler about us doing our best and for me, that’s what I’m all about — doing my best, working as hard as I can, never stop rehearsing, never stop grinding, going out there and doing what I do. Really working hard. Her work ethic is incredible and I think that’s why she is where she is.
What are you working on now? Gladys Knight’s team is currently managing me. I’m working on my album with some of R. Kelly’s folks and I think it’s going to be an amazing year for me. I look forward to dropping my single at the end of the summer.
Gladys seems so nice. She’s sweet and humble. She is the sweetest and most humble person I’ve ever met in my life. It’s kind of scary because she’s too nice and when I’m in her presence, I don’t even look at her. I’m like, “Hi, Miss Knight.” I don’t speak and she’s probably like, what’s wrong with this kid?
Well, if J.Lo decides she wants to leave, would Paula [Abdul] come back? Gladys might be great. I think Paula would be great. I think Miss Gladys Knight would be great. I’d like to see maybe Sheryl Crow or Beyonce, yeah.
Who were you rooting for most this season who you think left prematurely? I was rooting for Colton Dixon. He’s an amazing guy. Hollie [Cavanagh] was one of my favorites — she just had a pureness about her. Colton, Hollie, I loved DeAndre [Brackensick]. I love Joshua Ledet. It was a great season this year!
