American Idol

What Did Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas Think of Phillip Phillips’ “Disease”?

While American Idol judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Randy Jackson might’ve been a tad underwhelmed by Phillip Phillips performance of the rock tune “Disease” during last week’s Top 3 showdown, Matchbox 20 frontman Rob Thomas is singing a very different tune.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rob said that he thought Phillip’s performance “was really good.” Rob was reportedly very flattered that Phillip picked the song for the show and believed the guitar-toting contestant made the right move by changing the melody around a little.

“If you’re going to be an ‘idol,’” he said, “you need to be more than just a cover artist and I think he made it his own.” That’s some high praise coming from the song’s own creator!

Judge Randy Jackson had called Phillip’s version of “Disease” a “subdued moment” and said the performance was problematic because he can “do that in [his] sleep.”

Considering P2 made it to the finale, America seemed to wholeheartedly disagree with that opinion!
