Pretty Little Liars

Breaking Down the Pretty Little Liars Season 3 Premiere Sneak Peeks: What Do They Tell Us?

So far, we’ve seen four sneak peeks from the Pretty Little Liars Season 3 premiere (Season 3, Episode 1: “It Happened ‘That Night’”). While no concrete clues are revealed, we do learn a lot about what the Liars’ current state of mind is like six months after the masquerade ball, Mona’s (Janel Parrish) attack, and Maya’s (Bianca Lawson) death.

We also find out what the girls are scared of, and there’s a lot of evidence that someone (or many people) are still tormenting them. Let’s review what we can learn from the clips.

They’re getting prank texts from “A.” In this sneak peek, we hear the familiar sound of all four Liars’ phones getting an incoming text. But it says, “Show me your boobs. -A” They all roll their eyes, guessing that a 10-year-old boy probably sent it. So clearly they’re not afraid of “A” texts anymore. But should they be?

Garrett is going on trial. In the same clip, Aria (Lucy Hale) starts worrying about when they’ll “be news again,” suggesting that, immediately following the Season 2 finale (Season 2, Episode 25: “UnmAsked”), they were all over the news, thanks to Mona’s “A” reveal, and their friendship with Maya. And Aria says, “Garrett [Yani Gellman] will go on trial and we’ll be news again.” So clearly he’s still being charged for his link with Ali’s murder. Whether it’s simply tampering with Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse) autopsy report or something more serious, like Alison’s murder, we’ll have to wait to find out.

Hanna’s lying to the Liars. In this sneak peek, Hanna (Ashley Benson) tells Spencer (Troian Bellisario) that she has to leave their shopping trip because she has an appointment with Dr. Sullivan. But then we see her in this sneak peek, wearing the same outfit, and visiting Mona instead. And apparently she’s been visiting Mona often, since the nurse says, “We still haven’t seen any changes, but I’m sure she appreciates your visits.” Why would Hanna lie to Spencer about these visits? What’s her secret motivation?

Someone is visiting the Liars while they sleep. In the clothing boutique, Spencer says to Hanna, “I keep playing last night over again in my head … Hanna, there was somebody in my house. While we were sound asleep they were right there, in the same room.” We’re guessing she’s referring to the stormy night we saw in the drinking clip, since the Liars most likely all slept over at Spencer’s. Who could it be? Is it the same person who appears to stalk Aria in the school bathroom (in this sneak peek)?

The Liars have a brand new secret. In the same clip, after Hanna claims she’s seeing Dr. Sullivan, Spencer says, “But you wouldn’t tell her about...” Hanna replies, “No, no, come on, I wouldn’t do that to Emily [Shay Mitchell].” Spencer: “But it’s not just Emily. We were all there.” What event or secret are they talking about? We have a guess: They could be talking about the scene from the promos where Emily is standing over a dug-up grave. Maybe Emily got so drunk that she snuck out of the sleepover and went grave-digging. The Liars would have followed her to help her cover it up and talk some sense into her. So maybe that’s what Spencer’s talking about.

Catch an all-new Pretty Little Liars when Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, June 5 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
