No Love for American Idol: 2012 Finale Gets Lowest Ratings Ever

As excited as we were to watch Southern hunk Phillip Phillips get the American Idol Season 11 win, the show’s ratings were not quite reflecting our enthusiasm for last night’s star-studded finale episode.

Idol is already expected to get a “creative reinvigoration” for Season 12 due to declining viewership, and last night’s all-time low proves that desperate times will indeed call for desperate measures.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Idol received 21.5 million viewers last night, with a 6.3 rating from the adult demographic. This translates to a 32% drop in viewership from last year’s finale, which was previously the record-setting low for the show.

The good news? The number of viewers for the finale jumped up 43% from last week’s show, and Idol is still one of television’s highest-rated programs overall.
