The Bachelorette

Ryan Bowers vs. Arie Luyendyk, Jr. on The Bachelorette: Whose Side Are You On ?

Chris Harrison called it the Great First Date Syndrome. Symptoms include feeling extremely jealous and possessive because you established an early connection with the Bachelor/ette and you’re convinced no one else has what you have. Frank Neuschaefer was sick with it on The Bachelorette Season 6. Ashley Hebert had it on The Bachelor Season 15. Kacie Boguskie also had it on The Bachelor Season 16. And now Ryan Bowers seems to be similarly afflicted on The Bachelorette Season 8.

At the end of Episode 3, Ryan spotted Emily Maynard kissing Arie Luyendyk, Jr. — right in the mansion, around the other guys. That hurt Ryan and brought out his not-so-flattering, competitive, alpha-male, sports trainer side.

“Tonight was shocking in the fact that her and Arie were kissing in the house,” Ryan said. “And it kind of sunk my heart a little bit. I think Emily and I have had, right from the get go, a little bit of a spark there and I think everybody sees that. Arie and I are very different. He’s more of a dainty man and I’m more of a physical guy. I think it’s definitely a cat and mouse game, but I know how to compete so Arie’s in trouble.”

Uh oh! Emily doesn’t like cat and mouse competition. Remember her whole fear about what happens when the chase is over? That was during her first date with Ryan. She doesn’t want to be seen as a prize to be won.

That said, Arie is not really a dainty man, he’s a race car driver. We’re not dealing with a wispy poet vs. a meathead. Both seem like decent guys who are good with kids. Arie is winning the kiss war in the house — big time — and Ryan may have stuck his foot in his mouth with his comment about not wanting Emily to let herself go after marriage, but Ry and Em have a bond. Once a man has baked you cookies and written you two sweet love notes, you can’t just kick him to the curb.
