Cory Monteith’s Summer Project: Giving Back to the Community – With Help From Cell Phones?

We love a dude who gives back to the community, and that’s just what Glee star Cory Monteith (Finn) was up to last week!

Cory headed up to his native Canada recently – Vancouver, British Columbia, to be exact – to join Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson in handing out grants to a couple of worthwhile local charities. In his role as a Virgin Unite ambassador, Cory helped deliver $26,500 to Project Limelight – a performing arts foundation for young people – and $25,000 to Broadway Youth Resource Centre, an organization that helps at-risk youth center.

The trip was the second phase of Virgin Mobile’s promise to deliver big to charity with the sale of their Samsung Gravity 3 RE*Generation phone. Last year the duo announced in Montreal that $15 from the sale of each of the phones would be going to a worthy cause.

Local paper the Vancouver Sun, who just so happened to have a reporter sitting at Cory’s table when he attended the Board of Trade luncheon in Branson’s honor on the same trip (try not to be jealousss!), reports that Cory had high praise for the philanthropic billionaire, saying, “He works incredibly hard and sets the bar so high for anyone who wants to do anything philanthropic. I’ve been very inspired by Virgin’s model of business as a force for good.”

AND, it was apparently Cory who brought the attention to Vancouver’s charitable partners. “It’s out of a project like Limelight that I started acting,” Cory told the paper.

What do you think: Could one of TV’s hottest future stars be amongst those Project Limelight kids? You never know...
