Inside Christian Bale’s Machinist Weight Loss and His Extreme Aversion to Fans

“Sane” isn’t the first word you’d use to describe Christian Bale — and his former publicist/assistant Harrison Cheung would likely agree. Cheung’s new biography of the actor, Christian Bale: The Inside Story of the Darkest Batman, paints a slightly off-kilter picture of The Dark Knight Rises star, reports The Huffington Post.

Among Cheung’s reveals are the details surrounding the actor’s massive slimdown for the 2004 psychological thriller The Machinist and the star’s distaste for fan interaction.

Christian’s diet for The Machinist was more than a little extreme: He subsisted on water, an apple, and one cup of coffee every day, ultimately dropping 65 pounds from his 6-foot frame. To make sure he stuck to the crazy strict regimen, he cut himself off socially. “In the end, I had to stop going out,” he explains. “I realized that wasn’t going to work. I’d do a bit of eating hardly anything and losing 51 pounds and then I’d put on 7 pounds bingeing one night because I’d have a couple of drinks. So I decided no more social life, no more friends, no more dinners, no more drinks.”

His attitude is just as out-there when it comes to his fans. One time when a fan letter made it to his Manhattan Beach home, he reportedly sent a fax to Cheung recommending that the fan be “eliminated,” writing, “A screwdriver thrust thru the eyeball into the brain prevents any screaming. Let me know how it goes.”

Um, yikes.

Sounds like something Patrick Bateman would say... or more likely do, so it’s scary that of all the roles Christian has played, he apparently identifies most with the American Psycho serial killer.
