The Voice’s Chris Mann Dishes on His New Single and Embracing His Inner Voice
For his thank-you performance to coach Christina Aguilera, The Voice's third place winner Chris Mann chose one of the pop diva's most moving ballads, "The Voice Within," a song he identified with deeply.
Before auditioning for the reality competition, Chris had a longterm gig with Glee, singing on many of the show's hit records. Although the job provided a steady stream of income, the classically trained opera singer saw his identity as an artist slowly slipping away.
"I definitely lost a lot of my confidence and my 'voice,' because I had to constantly be vanilla for work. That’s when I stopped working on Glee," he told TV Line. "I had to get my own voice back because I was losing it. That’s a scary thing."
Thanks his experience on The Voice, Chris has regained his confidence and then some. He's currently working on a new single called "Roads," which he plans to release very shortly.
"It’s about the roads that we take in life to get where we’re trying to go and how it never matters if it’s a positive road or a negative road, that they always lead you back home," he explains.
Having been dropped by a record label in the past, Chris knows exactly what he needs to do this time around to make his dreams come true.
"I wasn’t as focused before as I am now in terms of who I want to be. I was still splitting the fence a little bit, wanting to be half Josh Groban and half pop. That was just my youth coming into play," he said.
"It really matters to a label that you are really specific. And when I make my record, I want to be Chris Mann, through and through, and now more than ever, I know exactly who that is."
