Game of Thrones

Does Alfie Allen Know What Happens to Theon in Game of Thrones? — Exclusive

Warning: This article contains mild spoilers for the later A Song of Ice and Fire books. Game of Thrones fans who wish to remain completely unspoiled should stay away.

Game of Thrones is a pretty unique piece of media, a TV show that is a faithful adaptation of a beloved book series. Many of the actors on the show have chosen not to read the entire series, for fear that it knowing where their character will be years down the line would influence their performance in the moment.

This leaves fans of the books in an odd position, as we end up knowing more about the future of the characters than the people who embody them so brilliantly on screen. One character whose arc goes particularly, er, challenging places is Theon Greyjoy. So when Wetpaint Entertainment had the chance to talk to Alfie Allen recently, we couldn't resist asking how much he knows about his character's arc. Here's what he had to say.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Have you read the books?

Alfie Allen: I've read halfway through book three. I kind of felt I needed to know what headspace Theon was in in the second book. But that was a long time ago. I've not gone back to it for material for a long time. And really I wasn't even using it as material then, I just wanted to read the books because they're such great books. Once I finished doing that I didn't go back to it at all.

How much of a sense do you have of where Theon's arc goes in the later books?

I don't really know. I know that he kind of gets a chance to redeem himself slightly. I know that he goes through lots of torture. But other than that, I don't really know too much. But people have said it's, like, Emmy worthy material, so it must be pretty good.

Emmy worthy, indeed. Alfie added that he'll be "thrilled" to tackle whatever Game of Thrones throws at him. "It's going to be good, I can't wait. If he even gets that fair, that'll be amazing."

Those of you who know the trials Theon has yet to face will certainly agree when we say that we're just as thrilled as he is to see how Alfie handles the challenges the next few seasons will pose for him.

For more from Alfie, check out parts one and two of our interview with him, and remember to tune in this Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
