Shawn Johnson Retires From Gymnastics, Will She Return For DWTS All-Stars?
On Sunday, 20-year-old Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson announced her retirement from competitive gymnastics due to lingering issues with her injured left knee.
Shawn was the youngest-ever winner of Dancing With the Stars when she and Mark Ballas took over Season 8 in 2009. Since the fall All-Stars season is inviting back winners as well as non-winners, it’s possible Shawn could decide to return. He left knee was repaired after she tore her ACL and MCL but it was deemed not strong enough to handle Olympic training. Since DWTS isn’t quite as intense as the Olympics, maybe it would just put her on a more level playing field with the non-athletes. (Maybe Gilles Marini could actually beat her this time? Or would voters give her another win over him?)
Shawn told People her immediate plans are to cheer for her teammates at the London Olympics this summer. She’s also planning to attend college next fall in 2013 and she’s considering Stanford or Vanderbilt. Shawn said she also plans to coach summer camps and do charity work.
"I think [gymnastics] set me up for a pretty exciting future," Shawn told People. "I'm not going to settle for the easy things." No one ever said DWTS was easy!
