Who Dug Up Alison’s Grave on the Pretty Little Liars Season 3 Premiere? Our Top 5 Suspects

We knew we were in for brand new mysteries in Pretty Little Liars Season 3, and certainly one of the biggest ones from the premiere (Season 3, Episode 1: “It Happened ‘That Night’”) is: Who dug up Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse) body?

Let’s start by stating the obvious: It wasn’t Mona (Janel Parrish), and it wasn’t Garrett (Yani Gellman). That means that the original “A” and Alison’s accused murderer are cleared, since they are both behind bars. So who does that leave in the suspect pool? The girls initially suspect someone acting on Garrett’s behalf, since the prosecution in his case had requested that Ali’s body be exhumed, and if her body was examined then there would be solid forensic evidence against him.

But that’s not entirely true. Garrett tells Spencer (Troian Bellisario) that Ali’s body would serve as solid evidence that he didn’t murder her. So according to him, whoever dug up Alison’s body is acting against him and hiding proof that he is innocent. Here is a list of our top suspects.

Lucas (Brendan Robinson): Pretty much everything about Lucas looks suspicious lately. In the Season 2 finale (Season 2, Episode 25: “UnmAsked”), Lucas was seen talking closely with Jenna (Tammin Sursok) and the Black Swan. As Spencer pointed out, why would the Black Swan have run away from them at the masquerade ball if she wasn’t hiding something? Then Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Aria (Lucy Hale) spotted Lucas walking around Rosewood in the middle of the night, and getting into his car on the same night that the girls discovered Ali’s empty grave. He made a point to ignore them at Senior Registration. Plus, if he’s on Jenna’s side, he would want to hide evidence that proves Garrett’s innocence.

Jenna: Again, Jenna is part of that Black Swan/Lucas triangle, and is most definitely anti-Garrett, so it would make sense if she was trying to hide Garrett’s innocence as well. Also, since we know Jenna is keeping her sight a secret, she must have a sinister reason. Perhaps it’s so that she can never be a suspect in something like a grave robbery. Ostensibly, how would the blind girl be able to pull off such a stunt? We know, however, that she could.

Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto): If our theories about Melissa faking her pregnancy turn out to be correct, then Melissa would have been perfectly capable of digging up Alison’s body. In the Season 2 finale, we learned that Melissa was in a romantic relationship with Garrett. If Garrett lied to Spencer, and finding Ali’s body would actually prove he’s guilty, then Melissa could have been trying to help Garrett’s case by stealing the remains. Remember: Both Melissa and Garrett are connected to the N.A.T. club.

Alison’s twin: There is a theory out there that Alison or Alison’s twin is the one who visited Mona at Radley Sanitarium in the Season 2 finale. If the twin is the one who murdered Ali, then hiding Ali’s body would help protect her against any evidence pointing to her as the killer.

Jason (Drew Van Acker): Jason has been MIA for a while, and his own motives, N.A.T. connections, and whereabouts the night Alison was killed are still unknown. It’s possible that he’s trying to protect someone (Ali’s twin?), someone who is linked to the murder by physical evidence on Ali’s dead body. He’s still such an enigma in our eyes, that it's possible he’s capable of anything.
