In the Season 3 premiere (Season 3, Episode 1: “It Happened ‘That Night’”) the Liars learned that not only are they still the center of public scrutiny, but they can't even escape "A" — they have a new stalker with the same name, and this one might be even more brutal than the last. The episode ended with the girls receiving this super creepy text: “Mona played with dolls. I play with body parts. ‘A.’”
So, who could the new "A" be? So far, we know that they are aware of Mona's "A" antics, they have access to the same texting powers, and, based on that text, they were probably involved, directly or indirectly, with digging up Alison's (Sasha Pieterse) body. This being Rosewood, that still leaves us with a lot of suspects, but here are the five people we're most suspicious of at the moment.
Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto): There are plenty of reasons not to trust Spencer's (Troian Bellisario) sister. She's hooked up with a series of shady guys, was somewhat related to the N.A.T. club, and had good cause to hate Alison (Sasha Pieterse). Plus, her relationship with Spencer (Troian Bellisario) is fraught with rivalry; all it would take is a touch of insanity to transform Melissa from a regular Hastings (which is scary enough) to a monster. And she's definitely smart enough to pull it all off.
Alison (Sasha Pieterse): We're still not convinced Ali is really dead. It would be such a good twist if she wasn't. If she is alive, she's a good candidate for "A". It seems possible that the two "A"'s were working as a team at some point, and we'd believe Mona would work with or for Ali. Ali was clearly intelligent and a master manipulator, and being presumed dead would make it easy for her to pull off all sorts of creepy tricks. Plus, Ali being the second "A" after Mona would be like what happened in the books...
Alison's theoretical twin: Speaking of the books, Ali has a twin in them, and there have been hints that the same could be true on the show. In the books, Ali's twin was actually the one that was murdered, but maybe the show could shake it up and make the twin be the vengeful one, angry that she was denied the good life Ali had.
Lucas (Brendan Robinson): Lucas was acting hella sketchy in the Season 3 premiere. In fact, maybe too sketchy — we think he's up to something, but we're not sure if he's the new "A," because we think the new "A" wouldn't be sloppy enough to get seen by the girls.
