Amber Portwood Prison Interview: “Getting Money at a Young Age … That’s What Really Got to Me”

Teen Mom's Amber Portwood was recently sentenced to five years in prison after deciding she would rather be incarcerated than complete a court-mandated drug rehab program.

Amber has remained pretty hush-hush since her legal troubles began back in February, but she's finally broken her silence in a jailhouse interview with ABC.

Amber says her decision to go back to jail was, in part, due to her recent suicide attempt. "I took 30 Suboxone within three days," she says.

"The depression took over. I'd just take four to five at a time underneath my tongue, and nod out. I had more than addiction problems. I had, you know, mental problems, too."

So, why did Amber decide to opt out of the rehab program that was meant to help her addiction?

"I felt like that wasn't the life I wanted to live, I felt like I'd rather do my time, and get it over with, and make the best out of the situation that's been handed to me," she explains.

Part of Amber's depression stemmed from Leah being taken away from her. "I felt like I had no reason to even be around, because I was a mom," she says of her daughter, who is now living with father Gary Shirley.

"I felt like that's what I was put on this earth to do, when I had her ... and I started partying and doing drugs because I felt like I couldn't do anything anymore."

Amber believes she will be healthiest in jail, and plans to make the most out of her time.

"I'm going to take some classes, I'm going to get my GED, take as many programs as I can," she says.

"You know, just try to better myself for when I do get out and not stay in prison ... I'll be off the drugs, I'll have an education to get me a job, you have to think of the positives in this negative story."

We're happy Amber is finally taking charge of her life, but how did she spiral so out of control in the first place?

"Getting money at a young age, going to parties where drugs were given to you, that's what really got me," she says. "There's nothing lower than trying to kill yourself."

We hope Amber makes the most out of her five years in jail, and comes out a healthier and happier person!
