The Vampire Diaries

Daniel Gillies on Returning to The Vampire Diaries and Playing Doctor on Saving Hope

We want Daniel Gillies (Elijah) to be über famous because he directs interesting movies, starts foundations for sick children, and is married to Rachael Leigh Cook. All we ask is that he show up on The Vampire Diaries every once in awhile and do stuff like this. When he spoke to TV Fanatic, he essentially promised he would.

“[T]he door's always open," Daniel says, adding that the set has a "special energy." Whew, that’s a relief! But Gillies will also be saving lives on a new hospital drama premiering June 7 on NBC. As Dr. Joel Goran, Gillies will scrub in on Saving Hope, which he calls “engaging and compelling and funny and brave all at once.”

In order to get into the role of a surgeon, Daniel did his homework, reading books such as Atul Gawande’s Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science. How studious. Not only is he passionate about the show and fitting into the role, he thinks its executive producer, David Wellington, “is going to be the next J.J. Abrams.”

High praise. We’ll definitely tune in to see Mr. Gillies wield a scalpel.
