From Dating in the Dark to Joe Millionaire: 5 Dating Shows as Crazy as The Choice

Last night, The Choice premiered on FOX, to the resounding sound of groans across the country. A dating show structured like The Voice, where celebs pick blind dates based on their voice and what they say? What could be more insane?

Well, how about one of the other ten billion bizarre and cringeworthy dating shows that have popped up over the years? In "honor" of The Choice's uh, spectacular, first episode (wel
l, 4.2 million people watched, so it has that going for it), here are five other mind-boggling dating shows that have scarred stuck with us forever.

1. Dating in the Dark: What it says on the tin: People go on dates … in the dark. The point is not to let looks interfere or whatever, but the whole "being stuck in a dark room with a stranger" thing sort of puts a damper on any potential bonding. Unsurprisingly, this was not a hit.

2. Parental Control: MTV is a goldmine for bizarre dating shows, and this is a good example. Parents who don't like their child's current significant other hand-pick potential mates for the kid to date. Then the kid has to actually go on dates with the parentally approved options before deciding whether or not to dump their current partner. Also, said current partner watches and comments on the dates — along with the parents. What could possible go wrong?

3. A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila: A dual gender Bachelorette-like show starring only people who would for some reason want a shot at love with Tila Tequila? Yeah, it was as insane as it sounds.

4. Room Raiders: Another amazeballs MTV creation, on Room Raiders a single guy or gal raids the rooms of three other singles (while the three watch and comment, of course), and then has to pick who to date based on what they find. The best part is that the raider is totally armed with a black light, because uh, certain things glow. Clean your sheets, folks!

5. Joe Millionaire: A twist on The Bachelor that tries to prove something about love and money. The single guy at the center of Joe Millionaire was presented as a regular guy who had recently inherited millions, and after he'd picked a winner, the truth was revealed: He was just a regular guy, no millions. If his pick decided to stay with him anyway, they actually would be given a million dollars. Because starting your relationship off by telling a huge lie is totally the basis for a lasting love. (Surprise, surprise: There were two seasons. Neither ended with a marriage in the long run.)

What's your favorite example of ridiculous dating shows? Let us know in the comments.
