American Idol

American Idol 2012’s Jessica Sanchez on Getting in Jennifer Holliday’s Face and the Moment That Made Her Want to Punch Someone

Even though she came in second to Phillip Phillips in Season 11 of American Idol, 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez still has one of the most incredible voices in the show’s history. She spoke with TV Line about some of her memorable moments and what she hopes to do with her career when she starts making albums of her own.

First, she reflected on singing “And I Am Telling You” after Phillip Phillips performed “Volcano” and Joshua Ledet did “Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” — two standout performances in one night. “I was ready to pee my pants. I was last, and I was backstage, and I was like, ‘I am ruined,’” Jessica says. Yet she didn’t want to miss her chance to tell the judges and America that she wasn’t going home. “You could see in my body language — even though I was standing there — that I wanted to punch somebody,” she adds.

If you’ve looked at the songs Jessica prefers to sing outside of Idol, it’s clear that she likes to keep it up tempo. Yet Jimmy Iovine kept steering her back to ballads. “He said, you know, that I can’t be singing songs that I’d put on my album. I have to be singing competition songs ‘cause we’re on American Idol. And I think that’s what messed me up,” Jessica explains. “I do sing ballads … but … I’m not the next Celine Dion.”

That preference will likely be reflected in her first album. (As long as she actually gets one!) Jessica discussed the importance of lyrics in the songs she hopes to write one day, saying, “I really want to take time and spend time to construct something that is completely me.” She didn’t exactly love her coronation song, either. “I’m disappointed that I went out there with that song, but now that it’s over, I can really promote myself in a different way and I’m ready to go into the studio and make songs that I feel comfortable with,” she says.

Of course, she had to talk about her big duet with Jennifer Holliday and revealed that her voice was nearly gone at that point. “I think just in that moment, it really didn’t matter if my voice was raspy or whatever, I just sang with that woman,” says Jessica. “We got in each other’s faces.”

Yes, you did. There are GIFs to prove it.
