The Vampire Diaries

Which Character Was Actually Supposed to Die in The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Finale?

Death comes in many forms on The Vampire Diaries, and it’s often fleeting. There were several deaths in the Season 3 finale, but only one of them seems actually permanent. Yet in a recent interview with TV Line, executive producer Julie Plec revealed that she’d actually planned on killing off a character for good — only to change her mind before the season wrapped.

It was a shocking moment when Alaric (Matt Davis) stabbed Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and the OV caught fire. Then the big twist came when we learned he’d actually taken over Tyler’s (Michael Trevino) body. But that wasn’t how it was supposed to go down. “We created the character last year… and our intention was, that after a long, arduous year of trying to vanquish and defeat the villain, our heroes would prevail and he would be no more,” said Julie. “But when you have actors [like Joseph Morgan] who are that good, making such a distinct mark in the roles that they are playing, you have to let your storytelling evolve and wrap around that a little bit. We collectively decided around the middle of Season 3 that we weren’t done with Klaus — or Joseph.”

Smart move. As suave as he is evil, Klaus quickly became a fan favorite. (As did Mr. Morgan.) Julie explains that there’s still a lot more story to tell with the Original family, and she couldn’t kill a character “who is doing a great job with tons and tons of story left in him...”

One family member with a big arc coming up is Rebekah (Claire Holt). Yep, despite her murderous little deed in the Season 3 finale, she’ll return to Mystic Falls High School. “We’ve never had our Valerie [from Beverly Hills, 90210] or our Amanda Woodward [from Melrose Place],” says Julie. “And with Rebekah, who is so vulnerable and damaged but has that tough exterior, we get to see a queen bee in action; we get to see a mean girl.”

Everyone better remember to send Bex a candy gram!
