Shailene Woodley on Amy and Ricky Getting Married: She “Is Ready to Go There” (Spoilers)

It’s been a long road since Amy Juergens (Shailene Woodley) and Ricky Underwood (Daren Kagasoff) accidentally got pregnant on The Secret Life of the American Teenager. And as Season 5 of the ABC Family drama begins tonight, it looks like fans are finally about so see the couple come full circle.

At the end of last week’s episode, Amy finally seemed to come to terms with not just being engaged but actually marrying Ricky, and instead of going through with an elaborate wedding, she gave into his wishes to just elope.

In an exclusive interview with Wetpaint Entertainment, Shailene tells us what’s going through Amy’s head and teases that Monday will bring on “a big thing” that will make fans happy.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Amy seemed to be really conflicted about a lot of things in Season 4.

Shailene Woodley: Yeah. I think she has a lot going on. She wants to get married, but I think making that commitment and actually going through with it is a hard thing for anyone to wrap their mind around, let alone a 17-year-old.

So I think that played a lot in her day-to-day decisions as far as who she is, the way she's acting, what her mood is like.

Despite the fact that last week’s episode ends on this “Let’s get married” note, should we expect it to be that easy?

Nothing's ever easy in life. But, yeah, I definitely think she's come to a point where she wants to make that decision and wants to make that commitment and is ready to go there.

But in the back of her mind, she's wavering on the thought. This Monday, a big thing happens, and I think fans have been waiting for a long time.

A happy thing?

A happy thing.

If they did elope, would she feel like she's cheating her family out of the experience?

I think that might be nice for her, actually, to have one decision that she's made without having anyone around to judge or to put in their opinion.

I think during her life, ever since she got pregnant, she's always had so many friends and so many family members giving her advice and giving their opinions, so I think that this decision is very liberating for Amy.

What about Amy's decision to go to summer school instead of getting a job and then almost failing summer school? What's going on?

I think this whole marriage thing just is very confusing for her and trying to figure out how to have time away from Ricky, but also stay with him and around him so that she knows that nothing is going on with him and anyone else.

I think a lot of her decisions in the past were based on insecurities, and I think that summer school might have been one of them.

Do you think a wedding will actually change anything between Amy and Ricky?

Absolutely. I don't know if it will change their relationship because they're already living together. They're already committed to one another, but I think it will change maybe a little bit about who they are as individual people.

How so?

Just as far as the way they view their relationship towards one another, the way they view their relationships towards other people. I think that when you get married, you have an individual as well as a co-dependent side.

Congrats on winning the award for Breakthrough Performance the MTV Movie Awards. How did that feel?

It was so fun to be there, and so unexpected that I did win. Just to be in the company of all those people is pretty crazy and awesome in so many different ways. It was a really fun night.

Was it different from receiving the Independent Spirit award?

It did feel different. The Indie awards were nice because it was a very small group of people. This was so many millions of people and that was definitely intimidating!
