Warning: Spoilers ahead, so read at your own risk!
Wetpaint Entertainment: Do you think Amy is at peace with her mother's decision to come out?
Shailene Woodley: Yeah. I think that it's something that for a little while will be a little bit bizarre for Amy, just to have a mom who she thought was straight her entire life, in love with her dad, and then go through a divorce to find out that she is gay. I think that there's a lot of confusion behind that for a 17-year-old. So I think that eventually it will get way easier on her, but I think for now, it's tricky.
Is it something we'll still deal with throughout the rest of Season 5?
Yeah. I think so. I think that there will come a day when Amy is able to accept it, but I think it will take a little bit of time.
What can you tease us about Season 5?
I think that Season 5 has definitely been the season that all of these prior seasons have been leading up to. I think a lot of answers are going to be revealed in this season. I think a lot of fans are going to see what they wanted to see for a while in this season. I think a lot of characters grew up a lot, and the exciting thing is that we have another pregnant teenager who joins the cast. She's a freshman. Amy kind of takes her under her wing, and there's a lot different, awesome storylines going to come from her character. So there's a lot of answers and a lot of new questions being proposed.
Do you think that Amy, in seeing another pregnant teenager, gets to reflect on what happened to her?
I think that, absolutely.II think from my view, definitely, just by watching Cathy make decisions. I think that's why it's a really great relationship because Amy is able to give Cathy advice, or maybe mistakes that Amy made, she can help this next girl not make.
And there’s the 100th episode — that must be so exciting!
Yeah. It was really crazy, really crazy, just to think that we had gotten there. We all grew up on the show together. We spent five years of our lives in each other's company. I think we’ve been reflecting on it, the entire cast and crew and everyone involved, thinking back to where we were five years ago or a hundred episodes ago, and how everyone's evolved individually.
Anything you can say about the episode, itself?
Yeah. It's definitely going to be unlike any Secret Life episode I like to say we tap into our inner Glee on this hundredth episode. There might be some dancing, some singing. Pretty exciting.
I can't even wrap my head that, on a show like Secret Life? Can you tease at all how we delve into something like that?
I think the best tease is to honestly say like we're channeling our inner Glee. If I say anything else, it will ruin the episode.
Do you feel like the show is now kind of at a point where you can maybe push the envelope in that way, and it's not so jarring?
I think we've kind of always pushed the envelope to be honest. I think Secret Life has always brought up themes and discussions in homes, in individual families because of the way in which they approach certain ideas and certain circumstances. I don't think that we’re pushing the envelope any more now than we ever have before.
Do you think Amy and Ashley will ever have a civil relationship?
I don't know. I hope so. I think that a lot of siblings don't really get along until they both grow up in their own individual way. So hopefully, that's the case for Amy and Ashley. Hopefully, they both just continue to evolve as individuals and eventually will get along.
