Kim Kardashian Spills on Sex Tape Scandal to Oprah Winfrey
Part one of Oprah Winfrey’s interview with the Kardashian family for Oprah's Next Chapter aired tonight, and the talk show queen got the skinny the gang’s most infamous gossip headline to date: Kim Kardashian’s leaked sex tape with her ex-boyfriend, Ray J.
Making the tape is one of Kim’s biggest regrets, she admitted. “I felt humiliated,” she said. And her family was embarrassed as well. “Imagine that conversation I had to have with my grandmother.”
When the tape first came out, Kim recalled, she went straight to mom Kris Jenner. “She knows how to calm me down, and she knows how to get me through anything.” After all, Kris was the person Kim went to when she first thought about having sex at the age of 14. Back then, the Momager didn’t try to stop her but rather convinced Kim to go on birth control.
Kris remembered the sex tape moment vividly as well. The timing couldn’t have been better — or worse. Inspired by what the Osbourne family had accomplished with their MTV series, Kris was shopping around a reality show about her own family when the tape leaked.
“No mother ever wants to hear something like that, and I could tell she was in a lot of pain,” Kris explained. “It was really hard for her to tell me that … I cried myself to sleep for a few nights and then said, ‘I love you. I’m always here for you, no matter what you do it’ll never be that bad. We can get through anything.’ I know who she is, and she’s a good person.”
Fortunately for the fam, of course, the show has since made them more famous than they had ever dreamed. Kim admitted she has the sex tape to thank for making her a household name at the start.
“That’s how I was definitely introduced to the world,” Kim confessed. “It was a negative way, so I felt like I really had to work ten times harder to get people to see the real me.”
As for accusations that Kim herself put it out there, she completely denied them. “Why would anyone put that humiliation to their family out there?” she asked. “Everything that our family does is a reflection on the other people.”
In the end, Kim said, “I’m definitely not grateful for that experience.” But between her sex tape leak and short-lived marriage to Kris Humphries, she’s grown as a person.
“I am how I am now, and I’m proud of who I am … I’m a changed person because of my experiences.”
