While some shows have successfully survived without their original showrunner, it's hard to imagine Community without Dan Harmon; the show is clearly his baby, driven by his unique vision. So when Wetpaint Entertainment had a chance to talk to Community star Dani Pudi at the 2012 Critics Choice Awards — where Communitywon Best Comedy Series — we had to ask about Dan's departure, as well as what's next when the showreturns in October. Wetpaint Entertainment: We know ‘the show must go on’, but how will it without Dan Harmon?
Danny Pudi: I don’t know! I mean I don’t know, we’re all still returning so that’s good. A couple of our great writers are still returning so we have some people still returning who know the style and the spirit of our show, but other than that I don’t know. What was the cast’s reaction to the news of his departure? Confusion. I mean it’s like what your reaction would be. It’s always strange to hear that the person who hired you is no longer working on your show. And it’s tough. It is tough because I think that there is no one like Dan Harmon. I don’t know what’s going to happen. Thankfully we have each other, our cast is so cohesive and tight that we are all just excited to get back and figure out what’s next.
So what is up next for Abed?
I don’t know. That’s a big question. I mean we saw where he went, we took down the Dreamatorium, we went down into his bunk bed chamber and he had a mini-Dreamatorium so I don’t know. I’m kind of excited, it’s going to be senior year and again, at the end of last year it was pretty dark but I’m glad Abed didn’t saw off Jeff Winger’s arm.
Yeah that might have made for pretty gory television….
That would have been a tough finale. That would be a tough finale!
Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) has completed all the credits he needs to graduate, so in what capacity will he be returning next year?
I don’t know. That’s a great question, how would you want him to come back? He could be a ghost, what else? He could be a professor? We could use janitors.
He would make a terrible professor.
He would be a terrible professor. We could use speakers; we could use a rugby coach! Maybe we have a rugby team, I don’t know!
More along the lines of a women’s volleyball coach…
Ooh — volleyball coach! That would be good. Okay, I think the one thing about community college is it offers us a lot of options for placement and our role in it.
