So You Think You Can Dance Season 9 Recap: Vegas Week Callbacks!
Vegas week is finally here! Tonight, judges Lil' C, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Tyce Diorio, Nigel Lythgoe, and Mary Murphy put the contestants through the wringer. After slashing nearly three quarters of the talent pool, they challenged the remaining dancers with a series of back-to-back choreography rounds.
Keep reading for a list of tonight's choreographers and some of the names you'll be seeing next week on the Green Mile!
Quick Cuts and Dance For Your Life
Before the choreography rounds, Hampton "Exorcist" Williams and hip hop martial arts dancer Tim Conkel were sent home.
Burlesque dancer Rachel Applehaus was asked to dance for her life after the jazz round, but her sexy routine lacked technique, so she was sent packing. One of the episode's highlights was hearing dance legend Debbie Allen tell Rachel to keep her clothes on! Contemporary dancer Amelia Lowe was also asked to dance for her life (why, we don't really understand), and not surprisingly, she made it through with flying colors.
(Side note: Is it just us, or does Amelia remind you of last year's winner, Melanie Moore?)
Untrained street dancer Cyrus Spencer was next to dance for his life, and the judges couldn't have been more pleased with his unique, heartfelt performance. It was a unanimous decision to send him through.
Before the group rounds, the dancers were asked to learn a series of routines by a variety of different choreographers. Teaching hip hop were past contestants tWitch and Comfort, for Broadway it was Tyce Diorio, and for Jazz it was the infamous Sonya Tayeh.
Teaching the penultimate choreography round in ballroom was Jason Gilkison, who gave the dancers a super fast cha cha routine.
For the final (and most intense) choreography round, it was the one and only Travis Wall with contemporary.
The Final 35
After a long week of blood, sweat, tears, and injuries, just 35 contestants remain. Below are some of the names you should remember going into next week's final elimination.
For the girls, look out for 19-year-old blonde bombshell Alexa Anderson, 18-year-old ballroom beauty Lindsay Arnold, quirky contemporary dancer 18-year-old Amelia Lowe, and 18-year-old ballroom dancer Whitney Carson.
For the guys, keep your eyes peeled for 22-year-old Swiss ballet dancer Chehon Wespi-Tschopp, who could be the next Alex Wong-style breakout star. Other standouts include street dancer Cyrus Spencer and 18-year-old contemporary dancer Joshua Alexander.
