Happy Anniversary, Harry Potter! Daniel Radcliffe Then and Now (PHOTOS)
Fifteen years ago today (on June 26, 1997), Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first installment of J. K. Rowling’s mega-popular series about the world’s most famous boy wizard, hit bookstores. Seven tomes, eight blockbusters, and countless harrowing adventures later, Harry is a grown-up magic-maker with children of his own — and actor Daniel Radcliffe is no longer the cute 11-year-old kid he was when the first movie premiered in 2001.
Don’t get us wrong: Daniel is still adorable, just no longer boyishly adorable. And thanks to his full-frontal nudity in the London (2007) and Broadway (2008) productions of Equus and his adult roles in the 2012 horror flick The Woman in Black and the upcoming beat-era indie Kill Your Darlings, Daniel has effectively distanced himself from the tween-focused franchise that launched his star. On top of that, the now-sober 22-year-old actor has openly admitted to a few dissolute years in his Harry Potter heyday. “I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone,” he revealed to Heat earlier this year. “Dead behind the eyes.”
Underscoring his new maturity, Daniel told the July 2011 issue of GQ UK (via The Washington Post), "I'm actually enjoying the fact I can have a relationship with my girlfriend where I'm really pleasant and I'm not f***ing up totally all the time. There’s no shame in enjoying the quiet life. And that’s been the realization of the past few years for me.”
Bravo, Daniel — and happy anniversary, Harry! Voldemort can suck it.
