Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: Who Blackmailed Melissa?

In Pretty Little Liars Season 3, Episode 4: “Birds of a Feather” we learned a shocking truth: Melissa Hastings (Torrey DeVitto) was the Black Swan. And, if she's to be believed, it's because someone blackmailed her into going to the Masquerade Ball and talking to Jenna (Tammin Sursok).

Melissa claims she has no idea who her blackmailer is, and says she assumed it was Mona (Janel Parrish). But this is Rosewood: Nothing is ever that simple. So what really happened that night? Here are some of our top theories.

Mona did Blackmail her: Hey, we have to acknowledge that Melissa's story could be legit, and Mona could have been the one behind it as part of her "A" persona. Perhaps Mona sent Melissa to the ball as a distraction for the girls so she could work her nefarious deeds.

Jenna blackmailed her: Melissa claims she was told to go distract Jenna, but maybe Jenna was actually the one pulling the strings. Why? We're not entirely sure — perhaps because she's part of the "A" team. Or just to mess with the Liars for unrelated reasons.

The new "A": We're still not entirely sure how closely the new "A" was working with Mona before, if they were working together at all. Perhaps the blackmailing of Melissa was actually the first move of the new "A", instead of the last move of the old one.

She wasn't blackmailed: Of course, we're still not convinced Melissa's story is true at all. Perhaps she is working as part of the "A" team, and the story about being blackmailed was just a cover.

What do you think is up with Melissa? Let us know in the comments below.
