Why Did Katie Holmes File For Divorce From Tom Cruise? Sources Blame Scientology
Scientology — it was always a mysterious cloud hovering over Tom Cruise’s marriage to Katie Holmes, and TMZ’s latest report pinpoints it as a chief cause of their divorce.
Although she converted to Scientology in June 2005, Katie was raised Catholic. In 2009 the couple enrolled their daughter Suri in a Catholic preschool while Tom was shooting a film in Boston.
“Katie has been listening to her parents who are devout Catholics,” a source told the Daily Mail at the time. “She is not convinced by Scientology and has told Tom that she wants Suri to be educated as a Catholic — as she was. They had been having huge problems agreeing on her school. To say they were having arguments is putting it mildly — but Tom came around to the idea in the end.”
TMZ’s report today, issued just hours after news broke of the couple’s split, alleges that Katie feared Tom would drag Suri deep into the church. “We're told the couple had been arguing over Suri — that she's now of the age where Scientology becomes a significant part of her life,” TMZ reports.
Katie reportedly filed for sole legal custody because she doesn’t want Tom to control decisions pertaining to religion. TMZ’s sources tell them the divorce isn’t about money, as she’ll be well taken care of under the terms of the prenup.
