Anderson Cooper Comes Out: “I’m Gay, Always Have Been, Always Will Be”
They say big (if not exactly shocking) news comes in threes, and maybe this is it. On Friday, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced their split and Adele revealed she was pregnant. Today, Anderson Cooper officially came out in a public e-mail to Andrew Sullivan of The Daily Beast.
Sullivan reached out to his friend, Anderson Cooper, for comment on Entertainment Weekly's recent cover story on how gay and lesbian celebrities are coming out in more matter-of-fact ways than the "Yep, I'm gay" magazine splashes of the past.
Anderson responded to his friend in a long, thoughtful e-mail confirming the longtime rumors about his sexuality. He allowed Sullivan to post his words on The Daily Beast’s website.
Toward the middle of the e-mail, Anderson writes, "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."
Anderson adds, "I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my colleagues. In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted. I’m not an activist, but I am a human being and I don't give that up by being a journalist."
