R&B Singer Frank Ocean Comes Out in Tumblr Post

On July 3, Odd Future’s Frank Ocean posted what were nearly the liner notes for his upcoming album, Channel Orange, on Tumblr. The entry tells the story of Frank’s first love, who was a man. The singer, 24, has worked with Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Beyoncé and has gained acclaim since his 2011 internet album, Nostalgia, Ultra.

“4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too,” Frank wrote. “We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I'd see him, and his smile. I'd hear his conversation and his silence.”

Already, Frank has received an outpouring of support. Country singer Chely Wright — the first openly gay musician in her genre — told TMZ, "I can't think of a better way for Frank to celebrate Independence Day. It's spectacular." On Global Grind, Def Jam founder Russell Simmons wrote,” I am profoundly moved by the courage and honesty of Frank Ocean. Your decision to go public about your sexual orientation gives hope and light to so many young people still living in fear.”

The support comes with a note of caution, however, that not everyone will approve of Frank’s annoucement. As Chely notes in her TMZ interview, her album sales have decreased by 1/3 since she came out.
