We know what you’re thinking: Seriously? Those two guys are nothing alike. Cory Monteith (Finn), sure. Charlie could easily pass for him. But Darren? No way.
Now, just hold on a second here. We aren’t saying that Darren and Charlie look alike, we’re talking about something else here. You know: personality, background, that sort of thing. So keep an open mind. Darren and this quirky Glee Project hopeful just might have a lot more in common than you originally thought.
1. They both have theatre training at a university level.
While many actors, including many Glee stars, chose to forgo college in favor of getting a jump start on their Hollywood careers, both Darren and Charlie took those extra four years get that university degree. Both actors have their B.F.A. in acting from performing arts schools in the Midwest: Charlie from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Darren from the University of Michigan.
2. They’re both known for their energetic, super-excitable personalities.
Charlie has been diagnosed with a mild form of ADHD. And Darren? Well, we’re not really sure what his excuse is.
Either way, both guys have their moments of being the most hyperactive, crazy sorts of goofballs we’ve seen. Darren’s always bouncing around set, making ridiculous faces, or yelling and dancing around for no apparent reason. We haven’t really seen much of Charlie’s ADHD on the show, but we can imagine that it’d be something pretty much the same.
Darth Vader masks. Attacking ninjas. Hanging around upside down. If you take a look at Charlie’s YouTube channel, it quickly becomes clear that he’s no stranger to the quirky YouTube vid. Darren, of course, infamously got his start on YouTube, starring as Harry Potter in the viral parody hit, A Very Potter Musical.
Yet along with those more formal productions, Darren and his college friends are also well-acquainted of the 3-minute YouTube video, as well. See examples here, here, and here. Also, here.
4. Both have dreams of acting on Broadway in NYC.

After graduating from college, Charlie moved to New York City to go after his dream of being a musical theatre actor. Darren, of course, made his Broadway debut in January 2012, when he took over for Daniel Radcliffe to play the role of J. Pierrepont Finch in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He described the chance to be on Broadway as a dream come true, and could possibly return in the future if his schedule allows. So while both guys share the same love of Broadway, Darren’s obviously a bit more ahead of Charlie at this point and time in the game. Fun fact: Darren’s not the only Finch of the two. Charlie played the exact same role while still in school at the University of Illinois.
5. They’re both self-professed nerds and comic book geeks.
Charlie tweets about making Star Trek references and loves to play video games. Darren loves comic books, Harry Potter, anime, video games, and was even voted by his Glee co-stars as one of the two Biggest Nerds in the cast for his love of all things geeky and sci-fi spectacular.
