Will Naomi Campbell’s New ANTM-Like Show Restart Feud With Tyra Banks?
The feud between supermodel Naomi Campbell and America’s Next Top Model host Tyra Banks wasn't one of those molehill-to-mountain things where one person makes a sly comment on Twitter and everyone's like "OMG they hate each other!" No. It was a 14-year battle grounded in jealousy and competition that only ended after both ladies hashed things out on Tyra's now defunct TV show back in 2005. But that peace looks shaky right about now ‘cause Naomi is holding casting calls this month in New York and L.A. for her new modeling show on Oxygen called The Face. Models on The Face will face various challenges and a winner will be revealed to become the face of a major brand. Sound like a certain CW show that we know? Naomi recently told Vogue UK (via Glamour) what she’s looking for on The Face.
"I'm looking for contestants who have the whole package - a beautiful face; healthy, toned body; unique look; interesting personality; confidence; and, above all, strong work ethic and drive. I'm seeking someone who possesses a global, worldly outlook, but can also be seen as a home-grown girl next door. Most importantly, I'm looking for a model with a fearless spirit who can completely transform like a chameleon, and take you on a unique journey that makes you believe that even the impossible is possible. If I find that, I’ll find a truly great model!”
So it sounds like we now have a modeling version of The Voice to go up against the veteran American Idol.ANTM is trying to revive itself right now after low ratings; Tyra and company ditched three longtime members of the ANTM family (RIP Nigel and the Jays!) and replaced them with fresh faces, but The CW still moved the show to the dead end street of Friday night.
You could see Naomi’s new show as a shark smelling new blood, but maybe it’s just a sign that reality shows about modeling still have legs (pun sort of intended!), and if there’s room enough on TV for half a dozen singing shows, we can embrace two former rivals with their own modeling shows.
What do you think? Will you watch The Face whenever it shows up on Oxygen?
