Fox Will Be “Downsizing” American Idol in 2013: Report

With what could be the departure of all three current American Idol judges, Fox appears to be making good on its promise to reinvigorate the show. According to a new report, network execs are now looking to “downsize” the program altogether.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox is planning to cut budgets and staff for Idol, while keeping host Ryan Seacrest onboard to “steer the ship back to shore.” That might be problematic for some of the talent they’re looking to replace the current judges with, many of whom will be expensive to hire. Some those A-list names include Fergie, will.i.am, Miley Cyrus, and Mariah Carey, who’s managed by Randy Jackson. Mariah’s husband, Nick Cannon, recently teased that the singer is out of the show's price range.

The report adds that budget cuts could also impact the flow of production by “affecting the number or length of location shoots and the size of crews contracted… future sessions might find one person having to do the job of two.”

A slashed Season 12 budget could be attributed to the fact that the Season 11 finale episode of Idol garnered the lowest ratings ever for an Idol season-ender.
