Whatever made Fox move forward to ink this one — perhaps that little jab from Camp X Factor about the Emmys snub spurred things along? — it’s a huge coup for the show. Here are five reasons why. She’s a Character and a Half Mariah Carey’s a hoot. She’s always been completely secure with her own worth. She owns the term “diva” unabashedly. So, we shouldn’t expect her to be as cozy as some judges past, but we should expect her to be just as entertaining if not more so than Britney Spears will be on The X Factor. Have you seen her infamous episode of MTV’s Cribs? Nuff said.
She Might Convince Randy to Stay There’s some talk about the possibility of Randy Jackson staying on board now that Mariah is a go. He is her manager after all, and wouldn’t it be nice to see Randy have some witty repartee with an artist he’s known for ages? Plus, it would be beneficial for contestants to hear the perspective of both a manager and an artist when those two happen to make such a successful team!
She Has a Face for the Cameras Mariah’s no novice to television. In addition to being one of the world’s most celebrated singers, she’s also dabbled in acting, sometimes successfully (see Precious) and sometimes not (don’t see Glitter). She’ll have no trouble adjusting to the theatrics of the gig. Plus, she totally prides herself on being fashionable and blinged up!
The Contestants Will Have a True American Idol on their Hands No disrespect to Paula Abdul, Jennifer Lopez, or Steven, but Mariah Carey is widely regarded as one of the seminal recording artists of all time. No auto-tune or back-up singers are necessary to improve on what she’s got going on in her own right. Any contestant worth their salt would die to have her career. Mariah’s own rags-to-riches story (she was a back-up singer once long ago) definitely puts her in a place to impart some hefty wisdom.
