Old Films on Pretty Little Liars: Norman Buckley References The Mad Miss Manton

You probably already know that Pretty Little Liars director Norman Buckley loves to reference old films in his episodes for the hit ABC Family show, and now we have a specific example from last week’s episode (Season 3, Episode 6: “The Remains of the ‘A’”).

In a blog post on his Tumblr, Norman reveals that the cute dance sequence between Hanna and Toby was actually inspired by a scene from the 1938 film The Mad Miss Manton. The scene shows Henry Fonda, playing Peter Ames, asking the titular character Miss Manton (played by Barbara Stanwyck) if she’d like to dance. When she refuses Peter goes to the dance floor and starts to dance by himself, which prompts Miss Menton to get up and dance with him. Sound familiar?

Usually we look for spoilers in old film references, but we think that this was just a fun scene that Norman wanted to put in the episode. Almost three months ago, before starting filming for the episode, the director posted some GIFs of the scene on his Tumblr and wrote that he is “stealing the scene for a show sometime.” We’re glad it was for PLL!

Catch an all-new episode of PLL tonight, July 24 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
