Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: Why Did Ezra Change His Name?
In an exclusive interview with Wetpaint Entertainment, Ian Harding (Ezra Fitz) revealed that Ezra is “not as good as he’s made out to be” on Pretty Little Liars. We have a few theories on the skeletons hidden in Ezra’s closet, but one blink-and-you-miss-it clue gathered from spoilers still puzzles us: His name.

We’ve always known Ezra as Ezra Fitz. But on Alloy Entertainment’s official PLL page, Ezra’s brother goes by the name of Wesley Fitzgerald (and will be played by Gregg Sulkin). Gregg even announced his upcoming appearance (Season 3, Episode 9: “The Kahn Game”) using the same, longer form of Ezra’s last name. What exactly is Ezra’s real name?
One theory is that Ezra was somehow disowned from his family. But since Ezra was already going by Mr. Fitz when Aria (Lucy Hale) first met him, that means he would have decided to change his identity long before he met Aria. If dating a high school student isn’t what drove his family away from him, what else could it have been?
There’s also the issue of wealth. From an earlier spoiler, we know that Ezra’s mother is a wealthy woman. But Ezra has never presented himself as someone with a trust fund or money to spare. If anything, Ezra is especially frugal, trying to save money by staying in and avoiding buying expensive things. Until, that is, the pricey camera he recently bought for Aria in Season 3, Episode 5: “That Girl is Poison,” even though he’s currently unemployed.
But even if Ezra does come from money, why would he want to hide that from Aria? All he wants from Aria is honesty. But if he won’t be completely honest with her, what can he expect? If Fitzgerald is a well-known name in the PLL universe, the way Rockefeller is in real life, why would Ezra want to hide that part of his life and family history with the girl he loves?
