The Dark Knight Rises Opening Weekend Gross Revealed: How Much Did the Movie Make in the Wake of the Shooting?

The third Batman movie raked in a hefty sum over its opening weekend, but it apparently wasn’t as much as the studio had anticipated.

According to E! Online, The Dark Knight Rises took in $161 million from Friday, July 20, through Sunday, July 22, which is the third-biggest opening ever after The Avengers and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. The franchise’s previous installment, The Dark Knight, earned $158 million over its opening weekend in 2008.

It is assumed that the devastating shooting at a midnight showing of the film in Aurora, Colorado, on July 20 negatively impacted profits. "We'll never be able to know how much money this tragedy cost Warner Bros.," Exhibitor Relations box-office analyst Jeff Bock commented. "I think it's safe to say it [would've made] $15 million to $20 million more if that had never happened."

However, Warner Bros. isn't sweating that. Instead, the studio is making a "substantial" donation to a charitable fund dedicated to helping victims of the massacre and their families, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

In a statement released Friday, director Christopher Nolan said, “Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families.”

Warner Bros. and other studios elected to hold final box-office numbers for the weekend until Monday out of respect for those affected by the tragedy.
