America's Next Top Model

Tyra Banks on ANTM Cycle 19 Changes, Nigel Barker’s New Hosting Gig

You want someone to blame for all the changes on America's Next Top Model? Try Harvard.

Tyra Banks got her degree at Harvard Business School, and she’s applying it to the college-themed Cycle 19, which starts Friday, August 24. “I look at the show how my curriculum was at Harvard,” Tyra told Access Hollywood on Sunday. “So I break down everything [using] strategy. It’s not just like, ‘Oh! What can we do?’ It’s like, ‘What is our true strategy for this.’ ... I’m breaking up those books saying, ‘How can we do more with less?’… Harvard totally changed ‘Top Model’ upside down.”

One of the things ANTM has less of this cycle is Nigel Barker. The sexy “noted fashion photographer” was dumped from the show — but picked up by The Face, Naomi Campbell’s new ANTM-like modeling show on Oxygen. “I’m happy for Nigel,” Tyra said. “I mean, come on. He’s amazing and he built ‘Top Model’ with us so I can only wish him success. We’re in 170 countries and 24 formats.”

And now he’s out the door, while Kelly Cutrone returns for her second season and new judge Rob Evans is added to the panel. “Kelly is absolutely fantastic,” Tyra said. “She’s almost the star of that judging row.” Tyra also hints to a new term Kelly will be coining this season — combining “shoes” and “smize.”

And Rob? Well, we’ve seen Rob and Tyra looking pretty cozy in several shots and rumor has it the sexy co-judges are mixing business with pleasure. “We have this thing with Rob where he’s very difficult to look at for longer than three seconds at a time,” Tyra said. “You can ask all my crew … so it’s intimidating, but then you get to know him and he becomes family and very warm.” Yes, very warm.

“We’re calling it ‘Fierce Friday Foursome,’” Tyra said of her new panel, meaning herself, Kelly, Rob and the viewers with the new voting role. “While we were shooting, because we’re not a live show… Every week we would post the photos that the girls did. And so the audience at home would go [online] around the entire globe and vote… on who they thought should go home and who should stay.”

Did you vote for any of the Cycle 19 modeltestants? Do you think ANTM should continue this voting aspect, even though they aren’t a live show and the setup is a bit confusing? Will you be tuning in to watch the Fierce (and probably “Flawsome”) Friday Foursome on August 24?

Catch the premiere of America's Next Top Model Cycle 19: College Edition on Friday, August 24 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
