Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: What Did the Email From UPenn Say?
At the end of Pretty Little LiarsSeason 3, Episode 9: “The Kahn Game”Spencer (Troian Bellisario) received an email ostensibly from UPenn, which seems to indicate that CeCe really did hand over her app to a friend in the UPenn admissions office. But was the email the real deal, or is it a fake? And what exactly did it say? There seems to be some confusion amongst fans, so we went back to rewatch the scene and analyze exactly what's going on with this email.
Here's the text of the email:
Dear Spencer Hastings:
Your early admission application to the University of Pennsylvania has been received.
Thank you for making the University of Pennsylvania your first choice in schools. We look forward to reviewing your application. You will be notified once the process is complete and a determination has been made.
University of Pennsylvania Admissions
A few observations:
1. This is just a notice that UPenn has received her application, not an acceptance letter. That's a point in the message's favor, since an actual admissions letter would be totally unrealistic right now.
2. However, Spencer receives the email late at night, after the party. While we'd be willing to believe a UPenn admissions officer would stretch the rules and accept the application, we have a hard time buying that he'd run right home after the party and send out an email. Is that a sign the it's actually a fake?
3. There's a notable lack of specificity in the email. There's no "we will send responses by" date, there is no name attached anywhere to the email, there's no link to the UPenn website or suggestion of what Spencer can do if she has any questions. This could just be the vagueness associated with TV emails, but it could also be because CeCe made the whole thing up.
