2012 Summer Olympics Girl Power: American Women Outnumber the Men, Win More Medals
It seems fitting that the Spice Girls performed at the 2012 Summer Olympic Closing Ceremonies, considering that the London Games were dominated by women athletes. That’s right — the ladies cleaned up in London!
For the first time in history, the USA had more women than men competing in the Olympic Games — 269 female athletes to 261 male athletes. From women’s team sports like water polo and soccer to individual sports like swimming, the women also brought home more medals than the men, winning 58 medals to the men’s 45. Even better, the ladies earned 29 gold medals to the men’s 17! Girl Power, indeed!
We know that regardless of gender, a U.S. Olympic win is something to be proud of — but we can’t help feeling extra proud of how these ladies brought it at this year’s Olympics!
