Dancing With the Stars and Hope Solo Win 2012 Do Something Awards

Chaz Bono wasn’t the most impressive dancer on last fall’s Dancing With the Stars Season 13, but the fact that he got to dance at all helped DWTS earn the 2012 Do Something Award for Reality TV Show.

The feel-good awards were handed out on Sunday, but broadcast Tuesday, August 21 on VH1.

The Do Something blurb on DWTS reads, “Season 13 of the hit show featured Chaz Bono, their first transgender contestant, paving the way for promoting a wider tolerance of the LGBT community.”

DWTS won over these other reality TV shows trying to change the world in their own ways: The Biggest Loser, Whale Wars, Undercover Boss, and Savage U. The Reality TV category didn’t air during the two-hour broadcast, which is too bad, since DWTS pro Karina Smirnoff went to the event, and she probably could’ve accepted the award and made a nice speech. Season 14 star Maria Menounos was also there, in case they wanted a celeb dancer speech.

On top of the show's win, another DWTS Season 13 celeb, Hope Solo, won the Do Something Award for Athletes. Hope accepted the shiny shoe trophy at the event and said it would look good next to her Team USA gold medal from the London Olympics. We suppose she also could’ve accepted for DWTS, although that would’ve been pretty ironic, considering all her not-so-flattering book comments about the show. Her Do Something charity listing reads "Hope Solo is currently participating in the PopChips ‘Game Changer Program,’ where fans submit causes that mean a lot to them and then Solo will donate her efforts in support of the best cause."

Congrats to DWTS! Check out the full list of Do Something winners here. Now we just have to hope the show wins some Emmys...

Dancing With the Stars Season 15: All-Stars will premiere on Monday, September 24 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Check out the full All-Stars cast list here.
