Artist Wants to Clone Celebrities Using Yeast (It’s Even Weirder Than It Sounds)

In today's weird news, concept artist/"experimental philosopher" Jonathon Keats is attempting to clone celebrities like Lady Gaga and Barack Obama. Well, kinda.

Keats isn't trying to create duplicates of these famous faces. Instead, he's employing "a new way of thinking about cloning," as he told Discovery News.

Instead of focusing on the genetics of the celebs, Keats is coming at his experiment from the angle of epigenetics — the study of how environmental factors affect genes.

Basically, Keats is taking yeast cultures and exposing them to the same chemicals famous people expose themselves to. So, for instance, the Lady Gaga yeast will be getting the chemical equivalent of her "drunk diet." This will, theoretically, make the yeast cells more Gaga-like, for whatever that's worth.

The goal of all this remains rather unclear to us, but it appears to have something to do with art.

"There's this drive to verisimilitude," Keats told Discovery of the visual arts. "Once there were black and white photos, then color, then movies." And now, yeast clones.

If you're curious, the yeast will be exhibited at the AC Institute in New York City starting on September 13, 2012.
