The Newsroom Season 1 Finale: 3 Reasons You Really, Really Need to Watch
What do critics know, really?
Critics may have given the first season of the Aaron Sorkin-penned drama, The Newsroom, mixed reviews, but we can’t get enough of Will McAvoy and his driven (if endearingly flawed) News Night crew.
While it’s no secret that TheNewsroom had a rough start, series creator Sorkin mused at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour a few weeks ago that all the chatter about his newest show — good or bad — is “good for television.”
Despite the criticism, The Newsroom has soldiered on — already winning a second season order from HBO — and continually improved. Here are three reasons you should — no, need — to watch The Newsroom Season 1 finale.
3. You'll Learn What Happens to News Night
Even if you’ve floated in and out all season, tune in this Sunday and you'll find out what the future holds for News Night — the fictional show within a show — and it’s pragmatic leader, Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels). While AWN head Leona Lansing (Jane Fonda) clearly fires Will in the promo, viewers know that McAvoy and Co. have at least one dirty trick up their sleeve, namely information from a whistleblower (with questionable credibility) that AWN is engaged in some News of the World-esque scandal. Does Will expose AWN, or does Leona get the last laugh? Tune in to find out!
2. You'll Find Out Who's Trying to Kill Will (Maybe)
Things tend to get interesting when your main character is in immediate danger of losing his or her life, and that’s just what happened to Will during Season 1, Episode 9. The episode ends with Neal (Dev Patel), who, after weeks of intense Internet trolling, finds the weirdo who's been threatening his boss's life. He doesn’t have a name yet, but he does have a chat room screen name, and with Neal’s smarts it’s only a matter of time before he tracks the creep down, but is he too late?
The promo shows a frantic Mackenzie (Emily Mortimer) searching Will’s seemingly empty apartment, only to find him in some state of disarray in the bathroom. While a shot of Will in a hospital bed indicates that he was harmed but OK, we’re still eager to find out just who is sending death threats to Mr. McAvoy.
Plus, there’s nothing like a life-threatening incident to bring out your (former) lady love’s true feelings. Does Will’s medical scare cause Mack to admit that she’s head-over-heels in love with her ex? Only time will tell!
1. You'll Hear More Magic Words From Aaron Sorkin
These days, people are more likely to tune in to a television show to catch up on the latest reality feud or find out who the baby daddy is, but we’d be lying if we said Aaron Sorkin’s witty banter and expertly crafted dialogue wasn't keeping us hooked week after week. Say what you will about Sorkin, but there’s no denying the man can write.
With Nina Howard's (Hope Davis) return, Maggie (Alison Pill) and Don’s (Thomas Sadoski) relationship reaching a breaking point, and Sloan Sabbith’s (Olivia Munn) possible departure, we can’t wait to see what magical word vomit Sorkin and his team have in store.
Make sure you tune in to The Newsroom Season 1 finale Sunday, August 26 at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
