Moms Sue California School District For Not Teaching About Condoms in Sex Ed — Whose Side Are You On?

Sex education is a controversial topic in the U.S. On one side of the debate are parents who believe that schools should only teach abstinence, and on the other side are parents who want their children to be fully informed.

In California, a group of parents on the pro-sex education side of the podium are suing Fresno's Clovis Unified School District for using textbooks that fail to mention condoms — even in the chapters about STD and pregnancy prevention.

The debate escalated quickly, and now the American Civil Liberties Union is stepping in to represent the angry moms and dads.

According a press release issued by the ACLU, the school's curriculum doesn't just fail to provide information on safe sex and contraception, but it also compares women who aren't virgins to "dirty shoes."

The school district's practices aren't just objectionable on moral grounds — according to an article on, they also violate a 2003 California state law mandating comprehensive and accurate sex education in all public schools.

What do you guys think? Are these parents justified in bringing the school board to court? Or is abstinence-only sex education the way to go? Tell us your thoughts below.
