America's Next Top Model

ANTM Cycle 19’s New Creative Director Johnny Wujek: BFF Katy Perry is “So Excited”

The new creative director on America's Next Top Model Cycle 19 is none other than Katy Perry’s stylist and best friend, Johnny Wujek. A former model himself, Johnny knows more than his fair share about producing a phenomenal photo shoot, not to mention how to style a girl for the flashbulbs.

We caught up with the very tall and handsome Johnny at the ANTM Cycle 19 premiere party on August 22 at the Tribeca Grand in New York City, and he dished on how Katy feels about his new TV role, why he feels like a “host,” and how the new viewer voting works.

Wetpaint Entertainment: What does Katy think of you being on ANTM?
Johnny Wujek: She’s so excited, oh my god. I talked to her the other day because she’s in LA and I’m here, and she’s just like, “Are you getting excited?” You know, we loved TGIFriday [on ABC] growing up, it was all about TGIFridays so now I’m like, “I’m on a show on TGIFriday!” It’s so crazy. Cooler than Urkel though.

Did you and Katy ever watch Top Model together?
In the trailer if it’s on we’ll watch it, for sure.

How does the new judging format work?
The table’s gone [during panel] so you can see their legs. It’s all about full looks, head to toe. And they’ve added the fourth element... Now social media is part of it. Bryanboy, he’s the voice of social media so now the users a) got to see a sneak peek of what’s going on before the show actually starts airing, and b) have a say in who wins and who goes.

Did you find that you agreed with the viewers?
Absolutely, 100 per cent.

Can you explain your role on the show?
I’m the creative director, which is awesome because I don’t have to schlep any clothes, I don’t have to do anything like that. I hire my friends for that. I’m basically there as a host for the photo shoots, so every photo shoot, the girls show up, they have no idea where they are or what they’re doing, and I explain where we are and what we’re doing, who the photographer is, what we want out of the shoot. While they’re shooting I give them direction, if they’re not giving it, we gotta give it. They only have a certain amount of frames. It’s sort of like being a host.

Do you ever miss modeling?
I definitely don’t miss it. I had fun doing it, and I still am on shoots and I take photos and I’m a photographer as well, so I love all those aspects, but I very much prefer being behind [the camera].

Did you agree with the other judges?
I was on location mostly, I was never on panel. Kelly [Cutrone] would come by, Tyra [Banks] would come by, I love Rob [Evans], Bryan’s a trip, so we all got along. I think the only rivalries were between the girls.

Oh really?
Lots. [Smirks] A lot is going on.
