Here are the most fascinating spoilers and clues from Marlene’s interview.
Toby is not a good guy. When asked if Toby might still have good intentions, Marlene answered with a flat “No.” [Ed. Note: This question and answer has since been removed from the TVGuide interview, but existed in the original transcript.]
There are two major storylines in the Season 3 winter season. One is the story of Spoby’s relationship, which Marlene says is “the story we’re going to tell … and you’ll get a better sense of it.” The other is the fact that “Mona’s back.” Marlene says that Mona’s (Janel Parrish) ability to “get in and out of Radley” means that the Liars will have the old “A” back in their lives in a very big way.
Paige may be hurt, but she understands. Some of us were confused by the scene towards the end of the finale when Paige (Lindsey Shaw) seemed to step in between Emily (Shay Mitchell)and her friends. Marlene explains, “[Paige] getting the police’s attention was her way of saying, ‘I get it, I understand.’ And Spencer’s look in subtext was, ‘We’re so sorry.’” We already know thatPaige isn’t Emily’s soulmate, so take from that what you will.
We might get to see the scene where Caleb is shot! Marlene hasn’t ruled out a flashback to that unseen moment. When asked if we’ll see it, she said, “Maybe. We’re still talking about it.”
The Spoby sex wasn’t as sinister as it seems. Even though Toby seems way harsh for taking Spencer’s virginity just before planning an epic night of “A” revenge, Marlene sees it from Spencer’s point of view, and says, “It was the right time.”
