The promo for this week's episode, Episode 2: “The Girl Who Cries Home,” shows models dancing on poles at a nightclub, but we’re not even gonna go there. We're here to discuss the first real photo challenge of the season — which was shot by 90210's Shenae Grimes and asks the models to pose as hunting trophies on the wall.
The photos for this particular shoot were posted back in May — and since the viewers are the “fourth judge” this season, we’re particularly interested in the reactions of our readers and folks at other outlets.
So far, Wetpaint Entertainment readers have had mixed reactions. A fan named Dy Ra wrote “I love the smize Yvonne..:)” However, Jennifer Ravolet wrote “Very bad concept for their first picture! Horrible!” She later added, “That's the head of the Creative Director that should be chop chop up there!”
Zap2it seems to agree with Jennifer. They posted a story calling this "America's Next Top Model's most offensive photo shoot yet." It's not even for the animal rights/anti-hunting angle, but because the photos are, in the writer’s eyes, "misogynistic" and "badly photoshopped" pics that liken the contestants to hunted animals.
“Portraying teen girls as mounted and preserved prizes is disgusting and goes against any type of B.S. positive body image messages the show tries to send,” Zap2it argues. They think the photo shoot never would have happened if Jay Manuel were still around as style director. (Would it have happened if Nigel Barker were still the noted sexy fashion photographer?)
This is hardly ANTM’s first weird shoot. In fact, there are too many to count. But hunting always gets a rise out of people and you could argue that human taxidermy is worthy of a head shake. If they can even shake their heads through the plaques...
What do you think of the photos? Do you think they look cool, gross, funny, crazy, offensive, meh or something else? Let us know in the comments! Catch the next episode ofAmerica's Next Top Model Cycle 19: College Edition on Friday, August 31 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
