What Is Madeleine Stowe’s Connection to Haiti? (VIDEO)
Dressed in designer gowns and standing on her balcony in the Hamptons, Victoria Grayson is probably not thinking about the island country of Haiti.
But Victoria’s off-screen counterpart, Madeleine Stowe, certainly spends a great deal of her time focusing on the poverty-stricken nation and its residents. The Revenge actress is a member of Artists for Peace and Justice, which helps build schools in the country.
Maddy has personally visited the country numerous times and seems to have a real passion for the place. She blogged for People Magazine on her last visit in January 2012.
In her final blog entry, the 54-year-old actress talks about visiting a morgue filled with dead bodies in order to perform a devotion meant to give those lost a proper burial.
“There's the narrow, gray hall with the overwhelming smell of death,” Madeleine wrote. “It's inescapable and I have to physically grasp my legs to keep them from giving out. There's no other way to stay in these rooms without passing out. I abstain and hang on.”
Scenes like this make it harder and harder for the humanitarian to return to the U.S. and continue on with her daily life. She’s currently helping to build Haiti’s first free public high school.
“When I come back, the same thing always happens: I’m hungry, but I can’t eat,” Madeleine told ABC News back in January. “The people are so alive and present. If I had all the money in the world, I know where it would go.”
