When the news broke that Jersey Shore is ending afterSeason 6, we're sure half the world said, "about time." But for those of us who are fans of the wild and wacky gang of guidos, we have to wonder: Why now? In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly Chris Linn, MTV's VP of programming, explained the network's decision to end the show.
"We’ve always said we’d do the show for as long as it made sense," Chris said. "We noticed what was going on in their lives, with [Snooki] having her baby, the relationships, etc. it felt like the right time to bring it to a close and end on a high note."
Translation: Now that Snooki is a mom and most of the cast is in serious monogamous relationships, they were worried the show would get plain boring.
Some people speculated that the rising cost of the cast was a factor, but Linn denied that, saying cost wasn't "a significant consideration" because the show is "still incredibly successful."
While it seems odd for a network to end a show while it's still doing well, Linn explained, "We don’t want to be in a situation where we’re milking every ratings point out of a franchise until the end," adding that the MTV Powers That Be "made what we think is the right, tough choice to end the show on top."
Do you think ending Jersey Shore now was the right move, or would you have stuck with the show even if the castmates settled down into a less hard partying lifestyle?
