Grey’s Anatomy Season 9: How Will Losing Lexie & Mark Affect Jackson & April?

Right now, it seems like everything is up in the air on Grey's Anatomy. We don’t know what’s going to happen to Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), how Mark (Eric Dane) is going to leave or what exactly is behind Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) anger … among other things. But what we do know for sure is that we have lost Lexie (Chyler Leigh), and we are losing Mark.

So with that in mind, what we want to talk about is how the departures of Mark and Lexie could potentially affect Seattle Grace-Mercy West’s newest couple, Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew).

The latter half of Season 8 saw the best friends become friends with benefits and then more than friends altogether. But between April’s breakdown about betraying her pact with God and April’s breakdown about failing her boards, Jackson didn’t exactly have time to fall head over heels for the emotional wreck that was April, no matter how great her hair looked.

But if both April and Jackson are back in Season 9, here’s how we think the departure of Mark and Lexie could help and/or hurt the fragile couple:

Help: Role Reversal

The fact that April is still around in Season 9 means that she must return to the hospital after having failed her boards. We assume that means that the woman is going to find (at least) some trace of confidence.

And we also assume that the loss of Lexie is going to hit Jackson hard in the emotional department while the loss of Mark is going to hit him hard in the job department. Let’s be realistic: The poor guy is losing his ex-love and his present-day mentor.

So if April returns with a new sense of purpose and Jackson loses two of the people closest to him, might we see a role reversal in the couple’s dynamic? Could April be the strong one for Jackson just this once?! And could that be just the thing the couple needs to actually work?

Hurt: Too Many Emotions

If losing Mark and Lexie causes Jackson to stray off his picture-perfect job course BUT April isn’t quite ready to be his rock, that could very well be the last nail in their coffin. After all, April was friends with Lexie. Maybe she’s hurting too. But how many times can Jackson be April’s shoulder to cry on before it gets old (if it hasn’t already)? And there’s always the fact that losing Lexie could make Jackson feel emotionally unavailable, and he could choose not to want to be in a relationship at all.

Hurt: Not Enough Time

Without Mark, Jackson could be left to prove himself all over again, which would mean working twice as hard. April, due to failing her boards, could have no other choice but to prove herself again, which would mean, you guessed it: working twice as hard. There’s always the possibility that they won’t have time for a relationship.

Help: Similar Situations

Considering everything we’ve mentioned above, there’s always the chance that any or all of it will be the reason that they get together. Even if they’re both upset or have to work twice as hard, perhaps the simple fact that they’re in similar life situations will bring them closer.

Final thought: This is all assuming that April even still wants to be a doctor. Could the couple ever work if April gave up medicine for good?

To say that the new couple is on shaky ground is an understatement. Let’s hope they can pull it together, because: 1) April with Jackson is much less annoying that April on her own, and 2) We really love it when Jackson takes his shirt off.

What do you hope Season 9 has in store for Jackson and April? Will the situation with Mark and Lexie help or hurt the couple? Or are you over it completely and more curious about Alex’s (Justin Chambers) love?

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 will premiere on Thursday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
