Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 Spoiler: How Does the New “No-Nonsense” Meredith Mourn Lexie?

Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has not had an easy life on Grey's Anatomy. There’s no debating that. From being Ellis Grey’s daughter to finding out that Derek (Patrick Dempsey) had a wife in Season 1, Meredith's journey from dark and twisty to bright and shiny has taken a long time. And just when she finally reached stability in her life with her marriage, Zola, passing the boards, etc. — her sister was killed in a plane crash. But how will that affect her demeanor?

We’ve already reported that Meredith will be taking the place of Bailey (Chanda Wilson) as the hospital’s new Nazi. Grey's Anatomy executive producer Shonda Rhimes recently elaborated on that to TVLine, explaining exactly what it means.

“I don’t know if she’s angrier or meaner, but she’s a lot more no-nonsense," Shonda dished. "She doesn’t have a lot of patience for less than perfect. She’s very good at what she does, and after her experience in the woods, takes saving lives very, very seriously.”

So perhaps she won’t travel all the way back to dark and twisty again, but rather stop halfway, at serious and mean. But no matter how much Mer yells at the new interns, she won’t be able to escape mourning Lexie (Chyler Leigh) altogether.

Rhimes told TVLine that there is a “lovely episode” in which Meredith finally confronts her emotions about losing the only sister she ever (really) had. “We sort of build to the idea where Meredith, who tends to clamp down because that’s her way, finally has a moment when she really mourns,” Rhimes said.

Are you more excited for mean Meredith or grieving Meredith? How do you think McDreamy will react to all of her mood swings? Is anyone secretly (or not so much) hoping that she goes back to being dark and twisty?

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 will premiere on Thursday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
