DWTS Pro Kym Johnson on Her New Fitness Web Show & Tips on Staying In Shape
The perky Kym Johnson is fit, adorable, and a fan-fave Dancing With the Stars pro. Basically, we can't think of anyone better suited to host a star-studded fitness web series.
Kym has recently joined forces with the BeFit YouTube channel for a new show, StarFit. As the name suggests, the show is all about stars and celebrity trainers sharing their fitness routines. We recently caught up with Kym, who shared more about the show and dished her own fitness tips.
Wetpaint Entertainment: You have a new show called StarFit. What is that all about?
Kym Johnson: Well, Lionsgate has a channel called BeFit on YouTube, and Star Fit is their newest show. I'm hosting the show and speaking to experts and different celebrities, to learn how they get fit and the trendy forms of fitness in Hollywood. It's only a five-minute workout and it's one show every Friday. You get to learn different tricks and different workouts that the celebrities are doing. We did a ballet one, where we worked with Mary Helen Bower. She trained Natalie Portman to get ready for Black Swan. So that was an amazing workout. We worked with Dolph Lundgren. He did an action hero workout. I learned how to do some kickboxing and action hero fitness. We had someone from Biggest Loser. It was a lot of fun for me to do it. I learned so much.
What can the average person take away in five minutes?
We do three different exercises and you can do that in just five minutes, or at the end, we give you some repetitions that you can do to make it a much more intense workout. So there's three exercises that you can do with a lot more repetition or adding heavier weights. People are busy nowadays and don't want to get out to the gym. It's easy to make excuses why you can't workout. The thing is, it's free. It's five minutes, and even if you can do just five, ten minutes a day of exercise, it's better than nothing.
Do you do anything beyond the dancing to stay fit?
Yeah. I'm actually away at the moment on a vacation just before the craziness starts, and I've got my kettlebell with me and some bands. I'm just doing five minutes of stuff in the day, just trying to keep fit, just doing a little bit just everyday even when I'm on holiday. You feel a difference, and even just doing a few crunches before you go to bed, I think it makes a difference. And once you start, and you see results, you want to push it and go a little bit more.
How do you keep stress and anxiety down when you're doing DWTS?
I think a lot of it is mind over matter. You just have to try to remain calm, breathe. I think at the end of the day, you've got to realize that people want to see you do well. It's an entertaining show. It's not brain surgery or anything like that. People want to be entertained, so you just have to remember that and go out there and enjoy it because if you're having fun, people will.
