Is The New Normal’s Bryan a Fictional Version of Glee Creator Ryan Murphy? Star Andrew Rannells Weighs In — Exclusive

The first time we watched Glee creator Ryan Murphy’s new comedy, The New Normal, on Hulu, we couldn’t help but think sassy protagonist Bryan (Andrew Rannells) seems a lot like a grown-up version of Glee’s Kurt (Chris Colfer).

And we’re not the only ones spotting similarities between the two shows; The New Normal’s co-creator, Ali Adler, tells us Bryan is actually quite similar to another familiar Glee face: show creator Ryan Murphy. So — what does actor Andrew Rannells think of the Ryan Murphy comparison?

In an exclusive interview with Wetpaint Entertainment during TNN’s Paley Center for Media event on September 5, Andrew dishes about the inspiration for his character — and weighs in on whether or not he’d ever want to guest star on Glee!

Wetpaint Entertainment: Tell us about your character on The New Normal

Andrew Rannells: My character is very loosely based on Ryan Murphy, very loosely in that we have the same job. I play a show runner in Los Angeles who finds himself at a point in his life with his partner where he’s ready to start a family and they decide they are ready to start a family. That’s sort of where the similarities end with Ryan and I.

Did you pick his brain and shadow him to get into the character?

Absolutely. I was lucky that when Ryan and I met, we sort of realized very quickly that we had very similar backgrounds – both being from the Midwest, both being raised Catholic. We both moved to big cities as soon as we could and we had a very similar sense of humor. It all sort of clicked into place in a very natural way.

If Ryan ever asked you to star on Glee would you be into it?

Oh completely. I’m a huge fan of Glee and Matt Morrison [Will] did shows together back in New York and I’ve had a lot of friends that have appeared on the show. I would absolutely love to do it but I’m very happy to be on The New Normal right now.

So that will keep you busy?

Yeah, I have a feeling I’ll be a little busy.

If he did ask you to guest star, what would you want your character to be like?

I have to remind myself that I’m 34. I’ve passed the point of being a student obviously. I guess I’d have to be a substitute.

Would you be a cool substitute?

Yeah! I’d be a cool substitute. I’d be the sassy substitute that comes in. We’ll go with that.
